Fashion evolution reflection: 70’s roller skating era


ALOHA! Welcome back, fashionistas! Today, we're going to skate our way through the vibrant era of the 70s, where the sound of disco beats echoed through roller skating rinks. I don’t know about y’all, but this screams the spirit of nostalgia.


In this edition of KIMology N’ Fashion, let’s lace up our roller skates and skate away into time to acknowledge the iconic roller skating era of the 1970s.


The 70s witnessed the rise of roller discos, where fashion was just as important as the moves being performed on the skating rink floor. People tended to wear sequined jumpsuits, bell bottoms, abstract patterns, and neon colors. Roller skating in the 70s was a riot of colors, with the neon lights and disco balls reflecting a colorful vibrant glow onto the rink.


One of my favorite forms of self-expression from this era was DIY customization. Roller skaters would customize their outfits to stand out and make an impression when on the rink. Rhinestones, patches, and personal items would be turned into ONE OF A KIND disco ensembles. The freedom to just express oneself through fashion was a mainstream theme, adopting a sense of understanding and community among skaters who appreciated the artistry of individuality.


I gravely encourage my readers to take inspiration from this abstract cool style that disco divas enforced, no matter how long ago it was. Think high-waisted shorts, big statement pieces when it comes to accessories, and also hair! This is the acknowledgment and celebration of a groovy, carefree spirit and style.
